background

Heidelberg at night

Time of the Courts
For five centuries the Kurfürsten from the Palatinate reside in the Heidelberg Castle from the Wittelsbacher family. Ruprecht I founded the University of Heidelberg in 1386 for his fame. The 7 princes elected the German king. Ruprecht III. was German king from 1400-1410. He was not elected, but he rose himself, and when he wanted to get absolution from the Pope, he crashed on his way there.

romance
At the beginning of the 19th century, Heidelberg experienced a second period of flowering. In 1803 the university was renewed. This new foundation attracted students and faculty to Heidelberg. The romantic settlement was marked by the Heidelberg castle. The magnificent ruins, rich in history and surrounded by the green mountain range, inspired the young romantic imagination. The castle was never rebuilt, but since the Romantic period it has experienced a second flowering as one of the most famous castle ruins in Europe.

local traffic

See also: Local transport in Heidelberg (Wikipedia)

The public transport system in Heidelberg is well developed. There are 5 tramways and the OEG (narrow-gage railway) overland line 5, all operated by rnv. The overland railway runs in the Rhein-Neckar Dreieck from Mannheim via Viernheim, Weinheim and Schriesheim to the Heidelberg main traffic junction Bismarckplatz and from here directly via the main railway station back to Mannheim. In addition, it is possible to use the S-Bahn for local transport.

The network is complemented by buses from Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (rnv) and Rhein-Neckar-Bus GmbH (BRN), which open up the city area and some suburbs.

Heidelberg is located in the Rhein-Neckar (VRN) transport network. All public transport services (trains and buses) can be used with uniform tickets from the Rhine-Neckar transport network, even if they are provided by different companies. The transfer is also permitted with a ticket for all service providers.

Within the city, tickets of the price level 2 are required, and a reduced short-haul fare is available for certain inner city services.

For dogs, a children's ticket must be removed or the group card extended by one person.

Bicycles can be taken on the OEG, trams and city buses Monday to Friday before 6 am and from 9 am on Saturdays, Sundays and Fridays all day. Bicycles are available free of charge on the S-Bahn daily from 9 a.m. and on weekends all day.

The cable cars are not integrated into the traffic network and have their own prices.

Public transport is available from 5.00 am to 0.00 am, there are early buses and a very good night bus network (Moonliner) at the weekend.

The HeidelbergCard [1] contains all journeys by trams and buses in the city area, as well as a ride by the Heidelberg mountain railway to the castle and the castle entrance with a large barrel. It also offers many discounts to other attractions and museums as well as to numerous retailers. The ticket costs 1 day: 13,00 €, 2 days: 15,00 € and 4 days: 17,00 €, for families there is a 2 day card for 32,00 €. ・ (as at 2015)

With own vehicle

Due to its historical and winding architecture and the long pedestrian zone, the city center of Heidelberg was to be avoided by foreign drivers. The one-way system is complicated and some roads and most parking spaces are only allowed for residents. Wrong parkers are towed rigorously. When visiting the old town, it is therefore advisable to head to one of the numerous car parks, following the parking guidance system. However, they are busy during the day for shopping and early in the evening for cinema on Saturdays and may require some time to wait.

The castle is also accessible by car. However, the entire Schlossberg is often closed when traffic is high. The few parking spaces and authorized parking spaces are located above the castle and are subject to a fee during the day. A walk of about 10 minutes through the castle garden including stairways must then be accepted. Recommended: Alternatively, you can park your car in one of the car parks in the city center and climb the castle with the mountain railway (included in the entrance fee for the castle) or on foot (in good condition, > 300 steps).

The Burgenstraße passes through the village.

After another rush of French troops, the castle fell into ruin again. The Heidelberg Castle became a symbol of romance. Despite its Gothic interior, the Royal Hall dates back to 1934.
